Attention students! Are you looking for a summer job that will give you valuable experience and insight into how a highway department works Look no further than Outagamie County Highway Department!

We are currently hiring for the Summer of 2026.


As a Seasonal Highway Worker, you will have the opportunity to work alongside Equipment Operators and assist in maintaining county highway roadways, right of ways, buildings and equipment. This is an excellent opportunity to learn new skills and gain hands-on experience in a real-world setting.


The position requires a minimum age of 18 and is located at 1313 Holland Road in Appleton, WI. The hours are Monday - Thursday, from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with possibilities of overtime

Key Responsibilities

  • Operates equipment such as tractors, mowers, pickup trucks, weed eaters, routers, etc. (that do not require a Commercial Driver's License)
  • Performs watering, weed control, litter pickup and mulching of landscaped areas.
  • Plants/maintains shrubs, trees, ground covers, etc.
  • Performs pruning, applies fertilizers, soil amendments, edging and vandalism repairs.
  • Performs building clean-up
  • Assists with patching/crack filling of roadways.
  • Clean cracks on roadways.
  • Breaks up concrete.
  • Performs hand work, shovels, picks up litter and debris; works independently or with a work crew.
  • Performs signing and flagging.
  • Cleans and washes equipment, vehicles and/or facilities.
  • Services, changes oil, greases and fuels equipment and works with mechanics as necessary
  • Completes and submits records of time, location, materials, and equipment used on each project.
  • Follows safety rules and guidelines as established by, but not limited to County and/or state/federal law.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Education/Certifications/Experience Requirements


  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Preference will be given to those enrolled in higher education for the fall semester.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain

Required or Preferred Skills

  • Must provide own steel toed shoes
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and be self-motivated
  • Ability to understand and carryout oral and/or written instructions
  • Ability to fill out daily reports
  • Knowledge on how to use hand and power tools.
  • Ability to use a broom and a shovel
  • Ability to read and understand street maps, plat maps and directions
  • Ability to perform minor equipment repairs
  • Ability to drive efficiently and safely
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with other employees and to deal with the pulic in a courteous and tactful manner
  • Ability to withstand a variety of temperatures and adverse weather conditions, good physical condition
  • Ability to perform tasks on a regular basis which require frequent standing, climbing, lifting, reaching, bending, squatting and carrying
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, or move up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to work in a safe manner
  • Highway seasonal workers typically work outdoors, regardless of the weather. They may be exposed to heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • May be exposed to loud noises, dangerous chemicals or fumes, or high traffic areas.
